New You Runner Up - 2011
Up until 9 years ago, my weight never fluctuated more than 5kg. After a difficult couple of years that included an interstate move, new job and losing our daughter after a short illness, my weight spiralled out of control. Not surprisingly, I was diagnosed with depression. The medication I was given made my weight problem worse.
As the years went on I was on the weight loss treadmill like so many other people. I’d usually manage to lose 4 or 5kg until a stressful event led to a binge that would sometimes last a couple of weeks.
I love doing community based/fundraising for my daughter’s local school and other causes dear to my heart. In March this year, I organised my daughter’s school fete. This was an all consuming (though satisfying) exercise. I also did a lot of comfort and convenience eating to ease the stress. After this event I tipped the scales at 80kg.
"It was then I knew I needed to help myself before I could help others."
I started doing some research online and reading fitness magazines. In the meantime, I joined a gym and lost a few kilos but felt I needed more direction. It was then that I discovered Ideal Bodies Online. I lurked on the IBO site for at least a month before taking the plunge. The results that Sue and her team have achieved are amazing. I also loved the idea of being accountable to someone whilst having a program made just for me. When Sue advertised a special, I decided to take the plunge. I chose a program where I had e-mail contact with a Feedback Coach.
"I made the commitment at the beginning of my program to 'suck it up' and get to the gym no matter what."
The 12 weeks wasn’t completely smooth sailing. I started a new job and my husband was diagnosed with pneumonia about six weeks into my program and was admitted to hospital. Normally at a time like this I would eat myself into a stupor. Instead I took great comfort in the routine of my training and made a point of organising myself to get there. I did have a few food slip ups during the twelve weeks but I made a point of going back to my normal routine the next day.
The benefits gained from entering the 12 week Body Blitz Challenge and following the IBO philosophy have been huge. I can’t thank Sue, Sharna and Kristin enough for their support and encouragement. A big thank you to Helen Walk at the Brunswick YMCA for mentoring me through my journey.
I haven’t worn a bikini since I was 15 and my one piece has made few appearances over the past few years. I can also fit into a pair of jeans that I haven’t worn since 2002.
I now consider my exercise and nutrition a part of my life as opposed to a diet. I have signed up for a 24 week program with IBO as I couldn’t imagine my life without it.
"I have also learnt that anything is possible if you are committed no matter how it difficult it might appear."
Ann Marie's Success Tips
- Don’t dwell on slip ups. Treat them as a “blip” on the radar. Slip ups only turn into mistakes when you continue the behaviour.
- Take your journey day by day and be consistent. Stay in the present and do the best you can. Don’t dwell on the future – it all may seem too hard.
- Do one food shop a week for your program and don’t shop when you are hungry. Prepare as many meals as possible in advance.
- Be accountable. Keep a food and exercise diary and refer back often to see how far you’ve come.
- Believe in yourself and the rest will come.

I loved the MRM supplements. I’m convinced the Glutamine and the Vitamin C powder kept me well and strong through winter even the rest of my family were ill. The Shakes and Protein Bars curbed any sugar craving I had.
